Eating Well Can Benefit Your Eyes! (If you wanted the short answer)
Eating a well-balanced diet composed of greens, vegetables, and Omega-3 fatty acids are all factors to keeping our bodies AND eyes healthy. There is no single food that we can say is better for your eyes. Anything that you do to keep your body healthy ultimately benefits your eyes too.
We’ve often heard that eating carrots helps improve our vision. Is that true?
Carrots are rich in Beta-Carotene which gives them their reddish-orange color. When our bodies process the beta-carotene it is turned into Vitamin A. Vitamin A helps to protect the surface of the eye and macula. While carrots do give us tons of benefits when it comes to their nutrient content, they are not the only veggies we need to keep our eyes healthy.
So where did this myth come from? During WWII the Royal Air Force spread a rumor that their pilots were gaining excellent night vision by eating tons of carrots. This was used as a diversion against the enemy giving them a huge advantage while they worked out the right strategy. This rumor stuck around over time and left parents all over with the belief that carrots would help their children see better….and maybe even eliminate their need of glasses!!
What About Anti-Oxidants?
Anti-oxidant rich foods do their own part in keeping our eyes healthy. These foods are composed of blackberries, blueberries, broccoli, and spinach just to name a few. They provide nutrition to the macula, our central vision, keeping it healthy. So don’t forget to incorporate these into your diet every day.
How do Omega-3 Fatty Acids Help our Eyes?
Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in fish, flax seeds, some nuts and seeds, and beans. Omega-3 Fatty Acids help protect our eyes from macular generation and dry eye syndrome. They also can help with drainage of intraocular fluid and help decrease the risk of glaucoma.
Eating a well-balanced meal goes a long way in protecting and keeping our eyes healthy. Incorporated with regular eye examination and protective sun wear we can do our part in maintaining good vision and ocular health!
